1967 (Hendrix Emerges) – 1992 (Grunge Explodes): The 25 Golden Years of Guitar
For those who are interested in the guitar, do you ever feel like time has stood still since grunge ascended in 1992?
If you’ve been observing the guitar world for the last 30 years, you've most likely been listening to a lot of the same players over and over again.
Additionally, chances are that these same musicians had their career highlights sometime in this 25-year time frame. This applies to guitarists of all musical styles.
Examples:
Rock: Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, Santana, Knopfler, Gilmore, Vaughan, Iommi, Young, Van Halen, Rhoads, Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai, Johnson, Slash, Hammett, Hetfield, Frusciante, Morello.
Jazz/Fusion: Benson, Martino, Pass, Hall, DiMeola, McLaughlin, Metheny, Scofield.
Classical/Flamenco: Segovia, Bream, Williams, Parkening, Barrueco, Russell, Assads, DeLucia.
Do the players above sound familiar? Thought so. Many great players were left out, but you get the gist.
The Future of Guitar?
The guitar will remain popular because it's one of the best sounding, most fun, easily portable, and coolest instruments out there. However, one can't help but wonder, "Has the guitar's peak come and gone decades ago?".
Perhaps another young Jimi or Eddie will come along and spice things up in the future. If not, 1967-1992 might go down in the music history books as "The 25 Golden Years of Guitar."
